Implant-Supported Prosthesis

What is an implant-supported prosthesis, and how is it applied? Medical information about implant-supported fixed bridges, zirconia crowns, and removable prosthesis types.

Implant-Supported Prosthesis (Implant-Supported Prostheses)

In the rehabilitation of missing teeth, after the biological integration (osseointegration) of the titanium roots (implants) placed in the jawbone with the surrounding tissue is completed, we call the superstructure restorations we apply "implant-supported prosthesis." Our aim is to help our patients regain their chewing, speech (phonetic), and aesthetic functions.

In our clinical practice, we plan these restorations according to the patient's bone structure and the extent of tooth loss, using the implant as a substructure (foundation); as zirconia/porcelain crowns fixed on top of it (with screws or adhesive), or as removable (snap-on/bar-retained) prostheses that the patient can insert and remove.

In Which Clinical Situations Do We Apply Them?

  • In single-tooth gaps, to restore the space independently without preparing any of the adjacent healthy teeth,

  • In cases where multiple adjacent teeth have been lost, to create implant-supported bridge prostheses,

  • In cases of complete edentulism (total edentulism), in patients whose jawbone volume is suitable, to transition to fixed teeth with the "All-on-4" or "All-on-6" concepts,

  • In complete edentulism, when bone tissue is insufficient for a fixed prosthesis, to add retention systems (locator/bar) in order to stop the movement of conventional denture prostheses inside the mouth.

What Are the Clinical Advantages?

  • Preserves Surrounding Tissues: Unlike traditional bridge prostheses, it does not require grinding down the enamel tissue of the adjacent healthy teeth to obtain support (preparation).

  • Supports Bone Volume: Because it transmits chewing force directly to the jawbone, it stops the physiological bone loss (resorption) that begins in that area after tooth extraction.

  • Natural Tooth Dynamics: Whether planned as fixed or removable, it provides much higher retention, chewing force, and a more natural tooth feel compared with traditional prostheses.

The long-term clinical success and lifespan of implant-supported prostheses depend on detailed radiographic planning, establishing the correct bite (occlusion) balance compatible with the jaw joint, and the daily care our patient will show for implant-area gum hygiene (interdental brush, oral irrigator, and floss use).

Frequently asked questions

It is a fixed full-mouth prosthesis screwed onto implants and not removed by the patient. The missing gum and bone are also recreated with pink porcelain or acrylic.

It is when a removable prosthesis fits into place with attachment components on a few implants. The prosthesis can be removed and cleaned, but it does not move while speaking or eating.

If bone quality and implant stability are suitable, a temporary fixed tooth can be placed on the same day or within a few days with immediate loading. We make this decision after examination and tomography.
